When small cracks or leaks are detected in your underground plumbing, it may not mean your pipes need to be replaced. Pipe lining is a trenchless plumbing repair method that helps restore the integrity of your pipes and allows the pipes to function like new. While most plumbing systems are designed to last for 60 to 80 years or longer, proper plumbing maintenance is necessary to avoid major repairs and inconveniences along the way.

What is Pipe Lining?

Pipe lining repairs your system at a fraction of the time and cost of traditional methods. The trenchless solution causes minimal disruption to your lawn but allows for complete repair of the pipes. Cure-in-place-pipeline (or CIPP) is the most popular method of pipe lining. It allows you to make repairs to the current pipe that will last for decades.

How Pipe Lining Works

The work for CIPP repairs is typically completed in three phases:

  • Sewer Camera Inspection: Before the pipe lining process begins, technicians will feed a live camera into one of the two access holes created to make the repairs. The live feed helps locate the issue and gives the plumber eyes on the repair process.

  • Pipe Cleaning: A hydro jetting process rids the pipe of any grease and debris buildup. This step helps you keep the majority of the pipe’s original diameter.

  • CIPP: To complete the CIPP process, the technicians will create a small access hole near the affected pipe. A liner is coated with epoxy resin and pushed through the pipe. Water or air is used to expand the liner, pushing the resin into the inner walls of the newly-clean pipe. Heat is applied for the resin to dry quickly and when the liner is removed, the old pipe is restored to like-new condition with a new lining.
